The Mohawk Valley Hockey Club’s Youth Hockey Program was started in 2015 with one goal in mind. To Give kids everywhere the chance to play the great game of hockey! They say that necessity is the mother of all invention, and that is certainly the cause with this program. There is a common misconception that ice is needed to play hockey that simply isn’t true! The fact that there is no indoor ice here in Herkimer County does not deter us at all! You see we lay dekhockey (which is also known for floor or ball hockey) and since dekhockey is played in sneakers, no skating is required. Simply put anyone can play!
One of the Best things about our youth program is that it brings boys and girls from all over to play the great game of hockey. For last year’s program we had kids from all over, even including West Winfield and Fort Plain and most of the towns in between. This year we are hoping to expand our programs geographical reach, for our program it doesn’t matter where the child lives, we are happy to have them play. We are just based in the Mohawk Valley.
A major obstacle hockey has always faced is the cost associated with the sports. We aim to provide all the fun of the sport while keeping it was affordable as possible. For $35 our participants receive a t-shirt along with use of a protective helmet with a face shield and protective gloves. This is an incredible value for the price to register but again we want it so everyone has a chance to play.
Right now, we play our games in a gymnasium. While this works for now our long-term goal is to have our own indoor dekhockey rink. A dekhockey rink would be a first for Central New York. With a regulation size rink, we could maximize our kids dekhockey experience and host dekhockey tournaments which could draw teams from other states as well as Canada. Imagine the economic benefits (lodging, retail, tourism) of being able to draw in teams from other areas.
